Are Alnwick Castle & The Alnwick Garden Dog Friendly?
Thinking of bringing your dog to Alnwick? Before you go, check the rules for the main attractions, as they might not be what you expect.
- August 7, 2026
Alnwick Castle does not allow pet dogs, and The Alnwick Garden only lets them in on certain Dog Days. This surprises many visitors, especially since the two places are right next to each other.
The good news is your trip to Alnwick can still be great. There are some excellent nearby alternatives worth trying, especially if you’re on holiday in Alnwick with dogs and have time to travel a little.

Is Alnwick Castle Dog Friendly?
No.
Dogs aren’t allowed inside Alnwick Castle or anywhere within the castle grounds. The only exception is trained assistance dogs, which must be kept on a short lead. The castle also makes it clear that emotional support animals aren’t accepted.
It’s important to know that some older websites still say you can walk your dog around the castle grounds, but that’s no longer true. The latest visitor FAQs say pets are not allowed inside the castle or on the grounds, so plan accordingly.
There is no official kennel or dog-waiting area at the castle. If you are visiting with others, someone will need to stay outside with your dog.
Is The Alnwick Garden Dog Friendly?
The Alnwick Garden has more flexible rules, but only on specific days.
Pet dogs are welcome at Alnwick Garden during Dog Days, which currently take place on Thursdays and Sundays. Dogs must stay on a short, non-extendable lead, and there’s a maximum of two dogs per person.
Even on Dog Days, there are still some rules. Dogs are not allowed in Lilidorei, the Poison Garden, Ticket Sales, or most indoor spaces. Owners should also keep dogs away from water features, and since ducks roam freely, it may not suit dogs with a strong prey drive.
One place we recommend is The Bakery. It welcomes dogs every day; you don’t need a Garden ticket, and they even have a dog treat menu. It’s a great spot to visit, whether or not you’re going to the Garden.
If you plan to visit later in the year, keep in mind that Dog Days end when the Winter Lights event starts.
From 16 November 2026, pet dogs will not be allowed in the Garden.

What We'd Do Instead
This is where Alnwick really shines, in our opinion.
Instead of trying to fit your plans around the castle or gardens, we suggest spending some time exploring the town. Take a dog walk by the River Aln, visit Barter Books, and stop at The Rolling Pin for a coffee before choosing your next stop.
If you want to visit another castle, try Warkworth Castle. Dogs on leads are welcome in most areas, and it’s just about 12 minutes from Alnwick. If you prefer exploring ruins over stately homes, it’s a great choice for dog owners.
If castles and historical sites top your list, then here are some of the best dog-friendly castles in Northumberland, allowing dogs.
If you prefer the coast, drive to Craster and walk the path to Dunstanburgh Castle. It’s one of our favourite walks in Northumberland, and dogs on leads are welcome all the way. Afterwards, stop by The Jolly Fisherman, where dogs are allowed in the bar.
For an easy option, Alnmouth is just about 10 minutes away. It’s a lovely spot to enjoy with your dog, whether you walk along the estuary, stroll on the beach, or stop for lunch before heading back.

Final Thoughts
If your main goal is to visit Alnwick Castle or The Alnwick Garden with your dog, you might be disappointed. The rules are stricter than many people expect, especially at the castle.
Even so, we still recommend Alnwick as a base for a dog-friendly trip. Spend some time in town, then visit places like Alnmouth, Warkworth, or Craster.
In our experience, that’s the best way to enjoy this part of Northumberland with your dog.
