Hidden Dog-Friendly Rock Pools in Amble Just Beyond the Harbour

We headed to Amble on a Sunday, and the market was on.

If you’ve ever wandered around Amble Harbour Village, you’ll know it’s brilliant for local produce and a bit of a mooch. But if you’re visiting with dogs, it can be a bit much. It gets hectic quickly.

There’s food everywhere, dogs nose-to-nose, and you’re constantly stopping and starting. Ours were pulling every few steps; they weren’t enjoying it.

So after five or ten minutes of trying to make it work, we decided to give them their treat instead, by heading to the dog-friendly rock pools in Amble, tucked just beyond the main bustle of the harbour.

It turned out to be one of our most surprising finds from all the things we’ve done in Northumberland with dogs, fun, and completely off most people’s radar.

Watch the Spot in Action

Before we get into the details, here’s a quick look at the hidden dog-friendly rock pools behind Amble Harbour. We filmed this on a warm Sunday after leaving the busy market behind.

It’s peaceful, dog-friendly, and most people walk straight past it.

Most people from the harbour head out along the pier and follow it round past the boats. It’s a lovely walk that brings you back up near the cottages along the seafront.

But what most people miss is a spot just to the right of the bend under the cliff face, a little set of hidden rock pools tucked beneath the cliff face.

It’s not signposted, and unless you know to look for it, you’d walk right past. It’s actually on the way to Amble Links Beach, but it sits low down and you can’t see it from the main path.

You should watch your footing a little as you make your way down. It’s a bit uneven and rocky underfoot, so we wouldn’t recommend it if you’re unsteady or carrying lots. But if your dogs are confident swimmers, this is a brilliant little stop-off.

The pools aren’t deep, about a foot or two in most spots, and they’re calm. No waves, no other dogs, and most of the time, no one else at all. Just enough space for a cool dip on a warm day and a safe, splashy play in the shallows.

It felt like we had the place to ourselves.

The dogs paddled, swam, shook, and rolled about for a good half hour. If you’ve got kids with you, it’s an excellent spot for them too, shoes off and a bit of barefoot paddling. It’s not sandy, but it is sheltered, and a lovely spot to catch your breath before heading further on.

We wouldn’t call it a full-day destination, maybe a 30-minute pit stop, but it’s a proper gem for breaking up a busy afternoon or giving the dogs a moment that’s truly theirs, especially when the market’s full and the town feels hectic.

It’s quick, but that’s part of what makes Amble one of the best little dog welcoming towns in Northumberland for a low-key stop.

Just don’t tell everyone about it!
