If you want an easy dog-friendly beach walk in Northumberland, the Bamburgh to Seahouses walk is one of the simplest and most popular coastal paths we do.
It follows Bamburgh Beach south on a wide sandy stretch, with Bamburgh Castle behind you for much of the route. The walk is roughly 3 miles one way, depending on where you start and finish.

If you are planning a holiday in Bamburgh with dogs and want a straightforward beach walk without tricky route finding, this is usually the one to start with.
Start near the village green or cricket green below Bamburgh Castle, then follow the coast path through the dunes down onto Bamburgh Beach. There’s lots of people dog walking around Bamburgh Castle but not as many try this route.
Once you are on the beach, turn south and keep the sea on your left. That is all there is to it. This dog walk feels easy from the start because you follow the shoreline almost the whole way.
The first stretch is our favourite part. Bamburgh Castle sits behind you above the beach, and its shape changes as you move further along the sand. With dunes on one side and the sea on the other, it feels like a proper Northumberland coast walk without needing a full day or much planning.
As you get closer to Seahouses, the feel changes. The open beach gives way to more of a town and harbour, with houses appearing ahead. Look for the steps up from the beach to the seafront, then continue to the harbour if you want a clear finish point with boats, shops and places to eat.

For many dogs, this is a good off-lead route when the beach is quiet. There is plenty of room on the open sand, so it suits dogs that like a run and a sniff about.
That said, this is still a popular family beach walk, so be mindful of others. Keep your dog close near other dogs, children, picnic spots, and beach access points.
If you use the dune paths instead of staying on the open beach, be more cautious. Between March and July, those dune and grassland areas are more sensitive to ground-nesting birds, so a lead is the sensible option there.
It is also a fairly exposed stretch. There is little shelter, so on windy days the sand can whip around more than you expect. Bring water, especially in warmer weather, and be aware that smaller dogs can feel the wind more on this part of the coast.
This walk works at most tides because Bamburgh Beach is so wide, but very high tides can narrow the easiest walking line. It is worth checking tide times before you set off, and if you can, start while the tide is going out rather than coming in.
For parking in Bamburgh, the easiest options are the long-stay pay-and-display opposite the castle or the dune car parks up The Wynding for quicker access to the beach.
If you want the full beach walk, simply walk back the same way for around 6 miles in total. If you prefer a one-way walk, Seahouses is easy for lunch before heading back by bus or car.

If you want a stop in Bamburgh before or after the walk, The Copper Kettle Tea Rooms allows dogs inside and in the courtyard. This works well after a windy or sandy beach walk.
If you are finishing back in Bamburgh, The Victoria Hotel bar is another good option for a drink or something more filling with the dog.
At the Seahouses end, the harbour is the natural reward point. It is a good place for fish and chips, a casual lunch, or a wander watching the boats before you head back. The Bamburgh Castle Inn will welcome you and the dog for a drink or meal and has the best views of Seahouses harbour.
If you’re based in Bamburgh, this is one of the easiest dog walks to add to your trip. If you’re staying in Seahouses with your dog, you can do the same walk in reverse, starting from the harbour side and heading north towards Bamburgh for the same wide beach, castle views, and easy coastal stretch.
For most people, yes.
The Bamburgh to Seahouses walk is easier, flatter, and much more obvious to follow. If you want a simple dog-friendly coastal walk with fewer decisions, this is usually the better choice.
We cover the Bamburgh to Budle Bay dog walk here.
Budle Bay feels quieter and more open, but it needs more care for birds, dunes, and tide-sensitive areas. If it is your first walk from Bamburgh, Seahouses is the easier place to start.
The Bamburgh to Seahouses walk is 3 miles one way and 6 miles there and back.
Dogs can go off lead on Bamburgh Beach when the beach is quiet and recall is reliable, but they should be kept under close control near wildlife, other dogs, dune access points and busy areas.
You can get back from Seahouses to Bamburgh by walking the same route back, arranging a second car, or taking the Arriva X18 bus.
