The Top Pet-Friendly Hotel Stays in Bamburgh

Ideal for beach days, pub stops, and castle strolls, these hotels make an excellent base for exploring Bamburgh with your four-legged sidekick.

The Victoria Hotel

We recently stayed at The Victoria Hotel and quickly saw why it’s so popular with dog owners. Set right in the heart of Bamburgh, the location couldn’t be better. The castle is just a few minutes’ walk one way, and the beach is only a little further the other way. Perfect for those early morning or sunset strolls with the dogs.

From the moment we checked in, the hotel struck a good balance between friendly service and relaxed comfort. Louise at reception went above and beyond to make our anniversary stay memorable. The bar is the social hub of The Victoria Hotel and is packed with dogs during peak times. It feels like a place where dogs aren’t just welcome, they’re expected.

We stayed in Room 5, a standard option with carpeted floors, comfy space for two Golden Retrievers and an awe-inspiring castle view. The corridors are narrow and there’s a flight of stairs to navigate for outdoor trips, but you get 24-hour access and a helpful night porter on hand if needed. We’ve since recommended this to countless readers of Northumberland Dog Stays, and feedback has been consistently positive.

Best Features

  • Castle view from the standard room
  • Night porter with 24-hour access
  • Carpeted paw-friendly flooring
  • Smart TV with streaming apps

The Sunningdale Hotel

The Sunningdale Hotel is one of Bamburgh’s more understated accommodations, but don’t let that fool you – it offers warm hospitality, a central location, and a strong dog-friendly ethos that shines through. With 20 rooms spread across three floors, the hotel strikes a balance between practicality and comfort. Several rooms offer castle or sea views, and canine options include a ground-floor deluxe double and other selected rooms, available upon request.

The Sunningdale Hotel

Guests consistently praise the friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere, and it’s clear dogs are treated as part of the family here. Our favourite touch? The welcome pack for dogs is complete with treats and, if requested in advance, includes the option of a plush dog bed. The included breakfast is also a bonus, a mix of self-serve and made-to-order options, with sausages for dogs available on request.

This isn’t luxury in the high-end sense, but it’s a fantastic choice for a value-focused break in Bamburgh. Please note that on-site parking is limited; however, street parking is generally available nearby. Some of our readers have highlighted this as their go-to for a budget-friendly stay without sacrificing comfort.

Best Features

  • Dog welcome pack with treats
  • Optional dog beds
  • Castle / sea view room options
  • Family rooms with bunks
  • Breakfast with dog-friendly sausages

The Lord Crewe

The Lord Crewe is a boutique stay right in the centre of Bamburgh, combining upscale interiors with a truly dog-friendly atmosphere. The entire building has been beautifully refurbished, with a style that leans towards contemporary country, incorporating luxury touches that remain warm and welcoming.

While dogs are only permitted in one of the seven rooms (the Bamburgh room), that space is well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Expect Molton Brown toiletries, a Nespresso machine, and thoughtful extras, including homemade cookies. The hotel is exceptionally accommodating, with a dedicated dining room for dog owners and staff who go out of their way to welcome both humans and their dogs.

From the seafood-led menu (the prawn cocktail gets rave reviews) to the roaring log fire on chilly days, the atmosphere feels refined without being stuffy. The “dog room” is decorated to a high standard and has become a favourite among returning guests. Dogs are also welcome in the beer garden. We haven’t stayed here yet with our retrievers, but it frequently appears in our community’s recommendations.

Best Features

  • Dedicated dog dining room
  • Molton Brown toiletries
  • One dog-friendly boutique bedroom
  • Nespresso machine
  • Homemade cookies
  • Central village location

The Bamburgh Castle Inn

We’ve added this one as it’s just along the road and super popular. Although its name suggests otherwise, The Bamburgh Castle Inn is not in Bamburgh itself but in nearby Seahouses.

Bamburgh Castle Inn, Seahouses

Just a short drive along the seafront, this Inn Collection Group property sits right on the harbour front. In fact, the Bamburgh Castle Inn overlooks the bustling marina, offering unbeatable views across the water and just minutes from Bamburgh. Due to its name, it often appears in “Best Local Hotel” round-ups, but travellers should note the location difference before booking.

We’ve eaten here several times, and the videos are on our YouTube channel. We found the food to be good, with even better views. The classic pub dishes are perfect after a day on the beach with the dogs.

Best Features

  • Pet-friendly rooms
  • Budget dog-friendly doubles
  • Beer garden harbour views
  • Family rooms with bunks
  • Walk to harbour cruises

Scenic Walks & Coastline

The Northumberland Coast offers endless space for walking. From the dog-friendly beach below Bamburgh Castle with its stunning views, to quiet stretches towards Seahouses, you’ll find plenty of routes to explore. Many hotels are just a stone’s throw from sandy paths, making it easy to start the day with fresh sea air. We’ve walked these routes dozens of times with Henry and Bandit, and they never tire of them.

Historic Sites & Boat Trips

Beyond the castle, you can visit nearby Alnwick Castle, or cross the causeway to Holy Island for a step back into history. For something different, join a boat trip to the Farne Islands, where some operators allow dogs on board.

This is Seahouses, but again, a few minutes’ drive from any Bamburgh Hotel. These experiences make the area a great location not just for dogs, but for anyone keen to discover the rich heritage of the North East. Our own boat trip to the Farne Islands was a highlight — even the dogs loved watching the seals.
