Dog-Friendly Places To Eat in Northumberland

Whether you’re looking for a restaurant meal, coffee and cake, afternoon drinks or evening entertainment, you’ll find everything here, including our pick of dog-friendly pubs in Northumberland. From restaurants and cafés to traditional pubs, below we look at what this wonderful county has on its menu.

01 — The Craster Arms

Golden Retrievers relaxing beneath a table in the Craster Arms beer garden

Address: 2–4 The Wynding, Beadnell, Chathill NE67 5AX.

We stopped here for lunch after walking from Beadnell to Seahouses with our two Golden Retrievers. The food was excellent, but the enormous beer garden was the real surprise. It has more than 30 tables spread between open, shaded and covered areas, with plenty of room for dogs to settle without blocking the walkways.

Water bowls and a dedicated dog tap are available, while dogs are welcome in the bar, restaurant and outdoor areas.

Taste of the Menu: We tried the lemon-and-thyme chicken and the enormous fish-finger sandwich, followed by sticky toffee pudding and apple-and-almond strudel. The menu also includes seafood tagliatelle, Beadnell Blonde Ale-battered fish and chips, homemade burgers, and meat-free choices.

02 — The Jolly Fisherman; Craster

Address: Haven Hill, Craster, Alnwick NE66 3TR.

This award-winning restaurant has produced some of the area’s most sought-after smoked salmon and kippers for over a century.

The local Kipper smokehouse is opposite the restaurant, and the seafood could not get any fresher!

Always book ahead when dining with your dog, as it gets jam-packed, and they are not allowed in the restaurant upstairs.

You can opt to sit in the cosy, snug area near the bar or in the seating area outside. Set on the beautiful, rugged Northumberland coast.

Taste of the Menu: Fresh Kippers and locally picked crab. They serve a gorgeous platter for 1, a real crowd-pleaser! It includes locally produced cheese and chutney, a Northumbrian sausage roll, and salad.

03 — The Masons Arms

Address: 3 Dial Place, Warkworth, Morpeth NE65 0UR.

The Masons Arms is over 100 years old!

A warm welcome awaits you and your dog here in Warkworth. It’s one of my favourite places to take my dogs.

More people have dogs in Warkworth than don’t! It has a pizza shack that our kids love, but we head there on a Sunday as the Sunday lunch is the best around.

Taste of the menu: Pizza Shack offers small and large feasts, from vegetarian to meat, but the standout is the trio of meats on the Sunday lunch menu, served until 6 p.m.

04 — The Ship Inn

Address: Low Newton-by-the-Sea, Alnwick NE66 3EL

It is a fantastic eatery located within a set of cottages that overlooks the beach at Low Newton.

This charming, low-ceiling, stone-clad Inn with exposed brick walls offers stunning coastal views of Embleton Bay and Dunstanburgh Castle.

Taste of the Menu: For lunch, they offer a wide range of toasted sandwiches, ciabatta, local cheeses, and local Doddington Ice Cream, a favourite of our daughter! In the evenings, they serve fresh pasta with Ship Inn pesto, Local fish fillets and sauteed vegetables, Lamb Koftas, Steak, and crispy potatoes.

05 — The Joiners Arms

Address; Newton-by-the-Sea. Alnwick. Northumberland. NE66 3EA.

Hands down, this is the one! I love it for the incredible food, and it feels like a treat to go here!

Set in Newton-by-the-Sea, it’s where the coast meets country and offers a traditional inn with a contemporary twist.

It is one of the best dog-friendly restaurants in Northumberland.

Tucked away in a coastal village, it boasts many gorgeous Northumberland dog walks and trails you can do whilst enjoying a bite to eat here.

Taste of the Menu: Sharing platters, Pie of the day, Hen House Burger, Tiger Prawn Scampi, and chips (delicious!). The restaurant also serves a selection of local ales, dog beers and complimentary treats, so you can’t leave the fur babies out!

06 — The Potted Lobster

Address: The Potted Lobster, 3 Lucker Rd, Bamburgh NE69 7BS

The Hairy Bikers made me do it!

After seeing it on James Martin’s Saturday Kitchen, we finally tried The Potted Lobster, which didn’t disappoint. It’s a must-visit with a dedicated dog-friendly section, welcoming staff, and a seafood-focused menu.

We had gambas pil pil to start, shared Shetland mussels for mains, and skipped dessert (our favourites were already gone!).

The atmosphere was lively but relaxed, and service was excellent, even on a busy night. Henry and Bandit were welcomed with open arms, and there was plenty of space to settle in.

This is the place if you’re after top-tier seafood with your dog by your side.

See why The Potted Lobster is a top dog-friendly spot.

07 — The Black Swan Inn

Address: 2 Union St, Seahouses NE68 7RT

This historic pub dates back to the 18th century and is believed to be the oldest pub in Alnwick.

It recently underwent a half-million-pound restoration and is now rather sophisticated and serves Gastro-pub-style food.

Within the bar, you can dine with your pup because, you’ve guessed it, dog friendly!

Taste of the Menu: Locally caught Lobster, Scottish wild boar bangers and mash, and sticky toffee pudding, it’s divine!

08 — The Drift

Address: Cresswell, Morpeth NE61 5LA

It is a joy to visit Cresswell.

The beaches have plenty of rock pools, which my dogs love to sniff out at low tide.

After spending time on the beach, we head to this cafe for their hot, delicious food and fresh coffee.

Taste of the Menu: Corned beef pie, homemade cakes, scones, delicious teas, and coffee.

09 — William de Percy Inn & Creperie

Address: Jedburgh Gardens, Otterburn, Newcastle upon Tyne NE19 1NR

Stay the night with your dog in this pet-friendly B&B located in the small village of Otterburn, which is on the doorstep of Northumberland National Park.

Dine here with hearty home-cooked food at its core. This place is rustic with a boutique edge. It’s down-to-earth but elegant, quirky, and traditional.

Try it; you’ll thank us later!

Taste of the Menu: For breakfast, you can’t go past the full cooked! The main menu has the usual gastro-pub delights but features a Pie menu and the famous Crepe menu. The Le Croque has ham, mature cheddar fried egg, and parmesan cheese.

10 — The Duke Of Wellington Inn

Address; Newton, Stocksfield NE43 7UL

Boasting a roaring open fire, The Duke of Wellington Inn is a delightful place for a dog owner to refuel after a long walk with your four-legged friend. It has traditional stone flooring, so muddy boots are welcome!

Your dog will have a warm welcome in the bar area, and the entire restaurant menu is also served for those at the bar.

Taste of the Menu: Some faves are Coastal Cheddar and Leek Souffle, Beef Fennel Ndjua meatballs with garlic soughdough. The award-winning dessert menu, my fave is the coconut and peach pana cotta.

11 — The Twice Brewed Inn

Address: Bardon Mill, Hexham NE47 7AN

In the heart of Northumberland country, Hexam is surrounded by stunning scenery in all seasons.

This superb Inn offers a variety of delicious pub classics and a specially built pizza area with mouth-watering pizzas.

You can enjoy brilliant countryside views from the beer garden, where dogs are welcome, and the bar, where you can enjoy a cosy meal together.

Taste of the menu: The tasty breakfast and lunch menus include the chilli cheese toastie, which is unreal! The main menu features a trio of pork, homemade burgers, and fish of the day, followed by a dessert menu featuring white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake, which is rather memorable!

12 — Battlesteads

Address: Wark, Hexham NE48 3LS

Battlesteads in Wark, Hexham, has a sustainable menu woven into everything it does, from fresh vegetables that are all homegrown to the organic toiletries in guest bedrooms.

The rest of its menu is sourced from local Northumbrian providers.

Taste of the menu: Crispy courgette flowers are almost too pretty to eat! They also offer home-farmed Shitake Mushrooms with Oyster sauce, and they do meat well. Their homemade brisket burger and steak menu will hit the spot!

13 — The Northumberland Arms

The Northumberland Arms in Felton

Address: The Peth, West Thirston, Northumberland NE65 9EE

The Northumberland Arms is right next to the River Coquet, just across from Felton, and there’s a car park directly opposite.

We went for dinner with our two Golden Retrievers. The staff brought them water right away, fussed over them, and gave us lots of space in the big conservatory. It really felt dog-friendly, and everyone seemed happy to see them.

Taste of the menu: We had the breads and spreads, crispy cod cheeks, slow-cooked lamb shoulder pie, and a fantastic bone-in pork chop. Prices were about the same as other Northumberland pubs, but the food was definitely a cut above the usual pub meals.

14 — Lord Crewe

Liane and two dogs leaving the Lord Crewe at Bamburgh

Address: Front St, Bamburgh NE69 7BL

Situated in the heart of Bamburgh, a stone’s throw from the castle, you will think this place is an extension of it. You’re that close!

It is another award winner for culinary excellence!

We are bringing you nothing but the best here! What makes it one of Bamburgh’s top dog-friendly places to eat is the warm welcome for dogs, with dog-friendly areas within the restaurant and outside areas.

You will be spoilt by choice from the menu brought to you by the head chef at The Crab and Lobster in North Yorkshire.

Taste of the Menu: Lindisfarne Oysters, 28-day-aged rib-eye, and the local crab sandwich and fries are my favourites from the lunch menu!
