The Best Routes Around Alnwick for Dog Walkers

Alnwick isn’t really a place people visit just for a long dog walk. It’s a lively market town, so most visitors spend an hour or so in the centre before heading out. The real charm is how close you are to the coast and countryside. In just 10 to 20 minutes, you can be by the sea, walking towards Dunstanburgh Castle, or exploring peaceful countryside paths.

It’s good to know before you visit that not every major attraction in Alnwick welcomes dogs. The town is best used as a base rather than spending a whole day at paid attractions with your dog. Most people combine time in town with trips to nearby beaches, walks, and villages.

This page is our full guide to dog-friendly Alnwick.

1. Alnwick Town Centre

Don’t forget to explore the town itself.

It’s worth spending an hour wandering around before heading out of town. Stroll through the Market Place, past the old stone buildings, and towards the River Aln, where it gets much quieter.

If you want a break, Barter Books is always a good stop, and The Rolling Pin is one of our favourite dog-friendly cafés in town. Grab a drink, sit outside if the weather’s nice, and watch Alnwick go by for a while.

Best for: your first morning, older dogs, or an easy hour out.

2. River Aln Walk

If you’d prefer not to drive, just head down to the River Aln.

Once you’re away from the roads, it’s surprisingly peaceful. The path runs along the river through open grassland, with great views back towards Alnwick Castle from the meadows across the water.

You can keep this walk short or make it a longer loop by crossing the river and coming back on the other side. If you have more time, continue towards Malcolm’s Cross and Alnwick Pastures before heading back to town.

Best for: a good walk straight from where you’re staying.

3. Alnmouth Circular

This walk is only about ten minutes from Alnwick, and we find ourselves returning to it often.

The route is about 4.5 miles and offers a lot in one walk. You follow the River Aln to the estuary, cross the beach, walk through the dunes, and return along the golf course before ending up back in the village.

Some parts can get muddy after heavy rain, but that’s really the only drawback. Afterwards, there are plenty of places for lunch or a drink before you head back.

Best for: a little bit of everything in one walk.

4. Craster to Dunstanburgh Castle

If you haven’t tried this walk yet, make it a priority.

The walk starts in Craster and is about 4 miles, following the coastline all the way to Dunstanburgh Castle. It’s the kind of walk where you keep stopping to look back because the views are always changing.

Keep your dog on a lead where there are livestock or nesting birds, then enjoy exploring around the castle before heading back.

If you’re hungry after your walk, The Jolly Fisherman is just a couple of minutes from the car park and is a great spot to end your day.

Best for: first-time visitors to Northumberland.

5. Newton Pool Nature Reserve

This walk is something completely different.

The circular route is just about a mile, so it’s perfect if you want something easy or you’re walking with an older dog.

The paths take you past bird hides, open water, and marshland, and you can choose to continue on to the beach. It’s usually quieter than the more popular walks nearby, which makes it even more appealing.

Best for: a shorter, quieter walk.

One of the great things about staying in Alnwick is that every day can be different. You might spend an hour in town, walk along the River Aln without needing the car, or be at the coast just a few minutes later.

Whether you want a gentle riverside stroll or a longer walk along the Northumberland coast, there’s plenty nearby to keep you and your dog happy. For routes beyond the town, browse our favourite dog walks in Northumberland, covering the coast, countryside and National Park.
