Beadnell, Northumberland

Merrywind in Beadnell

A big detached house with a bright open-plan living room, room for six around the table and Beadnell Beach only 20 yards away.

About Merrywind

Merrywind looks and feels more like a well-kept family home than a self-catering holiday let. It has enough shared space for six people without everyone being on top of each other, while the decoration has clearly been thought through from room to room. Two small dogs are accepted, and the sand is close enough that the first beach walk starts from the drive.

The living room is the part of Merrywind that grabs your attention first. Three cream sofas give everyone plenty of seating around a large rug, widescreen television and the log burner, with the logs kept in a little basket beside it. Behind the sofas, a circular dining table is set for six, so everyone can eat together without being cut off in a separate room.

It is an open-plan living space, but the sitting and dining areas still feel like their own spaces. Neat blinds keep the finish clean and modern, while a tall tripod-style lamp in the corner has the look of an old seafarer’s spotlight. The large picture window looks over the low garden wall, the grass and rock pools to the blue water beyond. The wall sits low enough that it does not interrupt the view across the room.

The dining area leads into a small sun room furnished with rattan-style chairs, giving the house another place to sit away from the main sofas. The kitchen is not enormous, but it is more than big enough for six and gets plenty of natural light. Cream units, black worktops and matching dark appliances give it a sharp, modern finish.

Clean tiling runs behind the extractor, with an electric oven, a black fridge-freezer, a microwave, and a dishwasher covering the main cooking and storage needs. A separate utility room contains the washing machine and tumble dryer. There is also a cubicle shower room on the ground floor, which is useful when several people are getting ready or returning from the beach with wet gear.

All three bedrooms are upstairs, and each has been designed differently rather than repeating the same furniture and colours. One double room has pretty bedding, pictures above the bed and vintage-style white wardrobes and drawer sets. Another uses white and nautical blue, with seafaring lamps and coastal artwork.

The twin room features lighter green and yellow tones, and the two bedrooms look out to sea. Even the landing has character, including oversized “BEACH” lettering, a small seating area and a well-finished staircase. One double bedroom has its own en-suite shower, while the large family bathroom includes a slipper bath and separate shower.

Outside, the open driveway provides off-road parking, with a table for six, a green bench and room for the barbecue. The property also has an enclosed garden, patio and sitting-out area. The driveway itself remains open and should not be treated as secure dog space.

For People

Merrywind sits on the seaward edge of Beadnell, with only the driveway, grass, road and a further narrow strip of green between the house and the shoreline. Immediately in front are rock pools and a smaller sandy bay; from there, the sand continues for around two miles towards Seahouses.

Beadnell has a village shop and family-friendly pubs, while the wider bay is used for sailing, sea kayaking, windsurfing and scuba diving. Seahouses is the nearest traditional fishing port, with shops, places to eat, and regular boat trips departing from its harbour for the Farne Islands.

For Dogs

For dog owners, the position is the main reason to consider Merrywind. You can leave the car on the drive and reach the shoreline almost immediately, whether you want a quick walk beside the rock pools or a longer stretch along the sand.

Two small dogs are accepted, although a booking charge applies. The enclosed garden gives them somewhere to go outside between walks, but the parking area opens onto the grass beyond the house. Dogs should therefore be kept in the garden rather than left loose on the driveway.

Cottages.com currently shows a 4.9 out of 5 rating and Customers’ Choice awards for 2019, 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2026. That record is more useful than one recent score because it shows the property has performed strongly over several years.

Our main takeaway is the consistency. Nothing feels like a room furnished to make up the numbers; the colours, furniture and coastal details carry through the house. It looks cared for rather than merely fitted out for holiday use.

The booking point we would check first is exactly where the enclosed section ends, as the driveway remains open.

Merrywind suits people who want a proper house rather than a compact coastal cottage, with enough seating and bathrooms for a group and the sea visible from inside.
